When it comes to pitting the two great burger joints against each other, there are those who will remain blindly loyal to whichever establishment represents their coast. I will not be one of these people. What you see here will be a totally unbiased, objective comparison of the storied shops. Seven categories. One point for each victory. Winner takes all (and by all, I mean the Golden Star awarded by this blog). Read on!
Category 1: Name
Names are very important. I'm convinced that one of the reasons Coke does so much better than Pepsi is because its name is just better. The same goes for Kleenex vs. other tissue brands, Xerox vs. other copy machine brands, and Kobe Bean Bryant vs. other NBA players. You can't beat a man named after a steak. Whose middle name is also a food. You just can't.
Both In-N-Out and Shake Shack have great names. They're catchy, memorable, and best of all, both names seemingly tell you something about the restaurants themselves.
But how misleading is the name Shake Shack? Is the place really known for its shakes? Because they're not that good. And I'm not sure the place is even a shack.

I don't like things that mislead.
Winner: In-N-Out
Category 2: Convenience
Here's a question for you all. Would you rather drive to one of the many, many In-N-Out locations across California and wait for a few minutes either in the car or the comfort of an air-conditioned restaurant, or wait for 45+ minutes outside in East Coast humidity? Masochists need not respond.
For those of you who will rush to say that the Upper West Side location of Shake Shack doesn't have as long of a wait, here's my response. Most people go to the Madison Square Park location - that's why there's a longer wait there to begin with (right?). So most people who have Shake Shack actually do have to wait in a long line. Outside. With pigeons and squirrels. Dirty animals.
Also, there are only three Shack Shacks in all of New York City. That's not cool. I'll stop here before people start thinking I'm biased or something.
Winner: In-N-Out
Category 3: Menu Options
Shake Shack undoubtedly has more options on their menu. Shroom Burgers, Shack-cago dogs, The Arnold Palmers - there are tons of things you can get here that you can't get at In-N-Out (if you just mix lemonade and iced tea on your own at In-N-Out, I think they're just called Arnold Palmers, not The Arnold Palmers...big difference).
But remember: I'm approaching this comparison with the utmost objectivity. And objectively speaking, more options = more confusion. How am I supposed to know what's good at Shake Shack when there are so many things on the menu? And the choices aren't numbered, so my "Always order the #1" piece of advice doesn't apply.
At In-N-Out, you either order a #1, #2, or #3, with some off-menu secretness if you so please. Simplicity is almost always a good thing in my book.
Winner: In-N-Out
Category 4: Cost
Shake Shack costs more.
Winner: In-N-Out
Category 5: Taste
Ahh...the most controversial and to many the most important category of all. It's undeniable that both burgers are tasty. The meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and everything else from both places are so fresh. And maybe, just maybe, this comparison is all for naught, since some people think that Shake Shack isn't really "fast food" the way that In-N-Out is.
But whatever. I've come too far to let little things like that stop me.
Here's the big difference between the two: In-N-Out burgers have a very unique taste. You could line up 10 burgers from anywhere next to one another, take one bite out of each, and easily be able to pick out which one is from In-N-Out. I'm not sure you could do that with Shake Shack burgers (but if you feel that you do have a finely tuned ability to pick out that certain Shake Shackiness, this obviously does not apply to you).
Perhaps more troubling is that Shake Shack doesn't let you order grilled onions (?!?). And the hot dogs taste weird.
Winner: In-N-Out
Category 6: Iconic Status
When you think of In-N-Out, everything Californian just comes with it: warm weather, laid-back environment, beaches, beautiful people, and on and on.

Any other restaurant and this illustration would be absolutely ridiculous. But it's In-N-Out so it all seems to make sense.
Does Shake Shack have the same effect for New Yorkers? This is something I honestly don't know. But I definitely feel like there are other things that are just more New York: investment bankers, yellow taxi cabs, the moistness and smell of that smoky stuff that comes up from the subway vents, etc.
Winner: In-N-Out
Category 7: Happiness Effect
This, in my opinion, is the most important category - how happy do you feel when you take a bite of the burger? Very happy? Extremely happy? EXTRAORDINARILY happy?? Not happy at all (sadness)?
Here's the best way to judge. Look at someone's face when he or she takes a bite of a Shack Burger or Double Double. Like mine.

this entry is awesome
ReplyDeletewhat about five guys vs in and out
dude. that one doesn't even deserve a formal comparison.
ReplyDeletehahaha YAY! your entry inspired me to go get an in n out RIGHT NOW. because I can.
ReplyDeleteyeah, you wish you were here.
i am a totally unbaised third party from kentucky.
ReplyDeletehahahahhaha
i totally love this blog entry. IN n OUT is sooooo freakin ridonkulous with their juicy never frozen patties (u can taste the happy cow it came from), the melted slices of awesome american cheese (great cheese comes from happy cows...happy cows come from california, the same cows that provide the awesome beef patties), the super fresh lettuces and tomatoes, the mouth watering grilled onions (or without if dont like the disgusting taste or smell), and topped off with the secret sauce on their sweet buns.......WEST COAST i mean IN n OUT beats all
KENTUCKY Farmer of Chickens,
(KFC billy joe bob)
I'm with Jaynonymous on this one. I also love this blog, and agree that In n Out is awesome. Altho i have never had Shake Shack I trust Ed's fayce, and his fayce is an unhappy fayce. That to me says it all.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Shake Shack is not even the most popular shack. It is a distant third behind radioshack in second, and Shaq in first. If you cannot even be the most famous shack, how do you expect to rival In n Out???
my name is billy joe bob...total unbaised third party
ReplyDeletebtw will i heard district 9 was really really good...u should go watch it with that jaynonymous fellow that u confused me for. i think he might be super bored jus studyin all day with no play breaks b/c he has no play buddies
agreed. the second day i was home in cali i ordered 3 #2s animal style and two extra cheeseburgers.
ReplyDelete-T
word. plus if you factor in price...it's not even funny how much more shake shack costs vs. in-n-out. i can spend my last 3 dollars and get a double double or my last 2 for a cheeseburger. 3 dollars at SS gets me...fountain drinks OR french fries. ridiculous!
ReplyDeletehow can you disagree with such biased fayces? ;) and such subjective reviews? yup. no disagreement.
ReplyDeletelol. can shake shack get negative points for soggy, squishy, sponge-like buns? eww. good entry. very objective...sounding.
ReplyDeletethis blog rocks.
ReplyDeletei'm glad i met you, and i'm looking forward to reading more.
Not to be mean (honestly!), but this was a really irritating post. And I'm not even a fan of Shake Shack or whatever. But I do advise that as someone in law school, you should learn to argue a bit better without sounding like an incredibly biased snob from California.
ReplyDeleteSorry if that's offensive to you -- you'll probably delete this comment -- but I just had to voice it.
... I think e. may have missed out on the point.
ReplyDeleteWhat I felt wasn't irritation. I thought it hilarious. and I am a fan of shake shack.
can i get a golden star now?
mm.. e. understand sarcastic humor much?
ReplyDelete-f.
overreaction ftw.
ReplyDelete-g.
it's offensive because it's an utter work of trash
ReplyDeleteL.
Nope. Totally got his attempt at sarcastic humor, he's just not that funny at it -- right here, at least. And somewhere along the lines of what L. said, it's irritating because for a blog, it's not that well done/written.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe I'm just pissed that he's a Lakers fan. Who knows.
PS. Love the posse attack though. Good friends, Eddie!
in n out ALL THE WAYYY!!!!! this is an awesome post. i too, like ashley, am going to in n out now haha
ReplyDeleteDude fuck you. In n Out is greasy typical fast food fair. The stuff at Shake Shack is way better for you health wise and they don't need to load their burgers with all these toppings to make it taste good. it's all about the preparation. If you prefer to just taste grease and fat, then In n Out is your place but if you want to taste how a REAL burger gets made, then by all means go to Shake Shack, they know their stuff.
ReplyDeletefirst n last time reading ur blog cuz that just insane 7-0, shake shack is better, but to say this is unbiased is so wrong!!!! i would of gave u 4-3, maybe a streatch of 5-2 due to ur "wrong" coast bias but 7-0!!!!
ReplyDeleteCategory 5 is the only one that matters and you're insanely wrong on that point. Shake Shack wins in every way: the soft potato roll, the quality and flavor of the chuck/sirloin/brisket patty that's cooked to order and adequately seasoned, the tender leaf lettuce (no crunchy water-filled iceberg BS here), the more complex Shack Sauce, the lava-like oozing cheese, better proportions... I need not go on. You determine taste based on "uniqueness"? Here, let me shit in a baguette for you. I bet you won't soon forget how that tastes either.
ReplyDeleteI am New Yorker who moved to California, I have to say hands down In N Out is superior to Shake Shack. SS is overhyped, and its not worth the 45 minute wait, there are lot of other competitors in NY that try to imitate SS, they are also overpriced. In N Out beats Shake Shack easily. I think though there are few places that make even better burgers than In n out, Tomboys, Original Tommy's, and Carney's are pretty damn good. CA makes awesome burgers the only thing is that Pizza in CA is horrible, you cannot get good pizza here.
ReplyDeleteThe only category that really matters here is cost because everything else is purely subjective (and for someone who said they're being "totally unbiased", your article is totally biased). In-N-Out beats Shake Shack hands down with cost. And that's why it wins :)
ReplyDeleteJust found this on a random search on shake shake. As a NYkr, now an Angeleno - In n Out wins. First off it's called FAST food. Shake Shack fails right there.
ReplyDeleteAnd everyone seems to overlook the fact that Shake Shack is really just an upscale (more $ meat) version of In n Out. The creator/owner of Shack Shack has come right and said he was "inspired by" In N Out (copying). Its a "West Coast style" burger. So DUH - the original wins. Shack Shack is more like a Father's Office burger, more gourmet, but not fast food. Shack Shack is overhyped and basically trying too hard.
All in all - the Apple Pan is the best real fast food burger :)
